idols.

I don’t really think I have any idols, per se, but I suppose the person who comes closest is David Bowie. He was one of the first musicians I really got into, at the tender age of ten. I used to ask my dad to play his records all the time, and by the time I was in university I think I had every album he (at the time) had made, knew most all the lyrics and even learnt how to play some of the pieces on the piano.

There was just something about the man. His whimsical, fantastical lyrics appealed to something in me I still don’t understand, and honestly I think it was the first time I really realised another man could be sexually attractive. I wouldn’t say he made me realise I was bisexual, but his music and attitudes probably helped me come to terms with who I am.

I think what I like most about the man is that he was constantly changing, keeping up with the times whilst his contemporaries lagged behind. Funnily enough out of all his albums there are maybe two I don’t particularly care for (yet own anyway), but I admire how he at least gave it a shot. He’s a man who will try anything once it seems, who’s open-minded and who keeps on going. In short, I guess he sort of is an idol to me.

“It’s a god-awful small affair, to the girl with the mousey hair, but her mummy is yelling “No”, and her daddy has told her to go…”

I noticed a sudden surge of “is it okay to draw fanart??” pop up on my tumblr dash and, well- being someone who has been creating original works for years and who also draws fanart, I figured I’d toss in my two cents.
Drawing fanart is just another form of love. You love something enough to want to take part in it. There’s no shame in that.
Shows, games, comics, movies, etc. don’t just pop up out of thin air. I think a lot of Original Properties creators tend to forget that, on a much larger scale, fandoms have formed around someone else’s original ideas. You wouldn’t hate someone for drawing fanart of your characters, would you?
So take a seat, relax, and if you don’t like something- then don’t look. Common sense. More importantly, don’t let anyone else tell you that you can’t enjoy something just because they don’t share the same interest.

I really feel like that last part about the “unless you’re getting paid” just makes commission and what have you sound worse than it is. And I’ll be honest when you do commissions as a full time job it can really cause you stress and burn out, but there are people out there who will find you, befriend you, and always commission things you love to draw and it’s awesome.
herp a derp.

I agree with everything that was said, and just want to add that being told by an artist that they “had fun” with your commission, is literally the greatest thing that they could say to you. Nothing makes me smile as much as the knowledge that a) the artist got paid what they hopefully feel is a good rate for the work, and b) they weren’t stressing over and getting frustrated with the piece I asked for.
